EMC Workshops

The Electron Microscopy Center will be conducting in-person workshops for businesses and industrial users over the Spring. The goal of these workshops, supported by KY NSF EPSCoR, is to familiarize industrial users with the equipment, imaging and characterization techniques available at the University of Kentucky.

These three- to four-hour long workshops will include:

  • a detailed tour of the labs with in-depth review of the instruments' capabilities. Techniques available at the center include: electron microscopy (scanning and transmission), focused ion beam, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, small-angle x-ray scattering, microCT, x-ray diffraction, light microscopy along with advanced sample preparation equipment.
  • live demonstrations of the characterization techniques, centered around scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental analysis and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) for crystal orientation mapping, focused ion beam (FIB) techniques for micro and nanoscale cross-sectioning and microCT for millimeter and microscale 3D tomography. Other capabilities can be demonstrated based on the attendees' interest. Emphasis will be placed on techniques supporting additive manufacturing and micro- and nanoscale characterization, but techniques for other fields of interests can and will be demonstrated based on the attendees profile.
  • characterization of samples submitted by the attendees.
